A few months ago I was doing some strength training (no, I am not even close to being a poster child for powerlifting…but I pretend I am when nobody is looking) and noticed my three-year old boy was over to the side watching me rather intently. He stood there entranced as I performed rep after rep of various exercises. I could tell he was intrigued with this activity so I knew it would not be long before he would be trying to help me out.

At the time, I was doing some lifts where you slowly bring a bar of weights from the floor to your chest and back down. Something about this particular exercise excited him enough that he couldn’t stand to just watch me any longer. He had to try it out for himself.
He quickly scooted over between me and the weights. Grabbing hold of the bar, he attempted to lift it up like me. Knowing this was too much for him to lift, I took hold of the bar and helped raise it as high as his little arms would reach.
After just a few repetitions, he looked up at me with those determined blue eyes and said, “I do it, Daddy!” I smiled, took a couple of steps back, and said, “You bet big guy!”
Now I knew that it was too much weight for him to lift but I also knew my son had to try it for himself. As he attempted to lift that heavy bar of weights, it would barely even budge. He tried time after time while grunting with determination. But try as he did, the weights were just too much for him to lift on his own.
He then turned back to me and said, “Daddy help?” Now I couldn’t resist such a plea so I quickly leaned over, grabbed a hold of the bar, and together we did another set of lefts.
Search for the Lord and for his strength; continually seek him. – 1 Chronicles 16:11
Isn’t that just like we are with our Heavenly Father? He is always there trying to help but many times we push Him away and think we can do it ourselves. It is not until we reach exhaustion and desperation that we look back to Him and ask for the help He was trying to give us from the start.
The great news is that He is always watching and waiting for us to just ask. You see, I didn’t leave the room and let my little boy struggle on his own and neither will our God turn and walk away from you. Not even when we push Him out. He waits patiently for us to finally realize that we can’t do it all by ourselves.
Maybe right now you are struggling with something that you have been trying to work through on your own. It may be a business venture or a job not working out. Maybe it is a marriage that has been struggling for a long time. Whatever the issue you have, turn to God and ask for His help today.
